Turn motion detection on or off

What the Motion border setting does

Motion border is one switch for every camera. When it is on, SecureEyes watches your cameras for motion, draws a red border around a moving camera's tile, and saves events. When it is off, there is no border and no events. It is on by default.

It needs the Standard or Pro plan. On Free the switch in Settings is replaced by a Standard label, and choosing the row opens the plan offer.

Turn it on or off in Settings

2. 02Under Tile overlays, turn Motion border on or off.

Turn it on or off from Live

1. 01In Live, bring the camera onto the main picture. On iPhone, swipe the picture or tap the camera in the camera strip above it. On iPad and Mac, choose the camera in the camera list.
2. 02Choose Settings in the row of buttons under the picture. On iPhone a sheet opens. On iPad and Mac a panel opens beside the picture.
3. 03Under This camera, turn Motion border on or off. The change applies to every camera.

• On Free this switch has no plan label. It always reads off, and turning it on has no effect.
• If the button in that place reads Remove, the main picture is a pinned extra tile. Choose the camera's own tile instead.
• The iPhone layout is used whenever the window's shorter side is under 600 points, so a small Mac window behaves like an iPhone here.

Turn it on from Events

1. 01Open Events.
2. 02If the day on screen has no events and the page says Nothing is watching for motion, choose Turn On Motion Border.

• On Free the button carries a Standard label and opens the plan offer instead.

Choose hardware or software detection for one camera

Hardware uses the camera's own motion events. Software makes SecureEyes compare still pictures from the camera on this device every 2 seconds. Choosing between them needs the Standard or Pro plan; on Free these rows show Standard.

1. 01In Live, bring the camera onto the main picture and choose Settings.
2. 02Under This camera, set Motion detection to Hardware or Software.
3. 03With Software, set Detection sensitivity to Low, Medium or High. Medium is the default.

• The same rows are in the camera's full settings: Settings, then Advanced Settings, then Camera Features, under Motion detection.
• A camera known to have no motion events of its own always uses software detection. Its row says "This camera has no motion events of its own, so detection happens in the app."
• A camera that never manages to send motion events moves to software detection by itself.
• Software detection needs the camera to hand out still pictures over ONVIF. A camera that cannot give one gets no motion detection.
• With Hardware, sensitivity is set in the camera's own app or web page.
• High catches small or distant movement and gives more false alarms. Low reacts only to big, close movement.
• With Software, a change across three quarters or more of the picture at once, such as night vision switching on or passing headlights, is ignored.

See whether a camera sends motion events

1. 01In Live, bring the camera onto the main picture, choose Settings, then Advanced Settings.
2. 02Open Camera Features.
3. 03Under Motion detection, the Motion events row shows a check mark when the camera offers ONVIF motion events. "Not checked yet. Use Maintenance to ask the camera." means the camera has not been asked yet.
