(device name) owns the camera list
A device that follows the capture device cannot change cameras. Why the message appears, how to make this device the capture device, and what to do.
What it says
A message titled with a device's name followed by owns the camera list, for example ams owns the camera list, means you tried to change something that the capture device owns. It reads: It is the capture device, so cameras, locations and synced settings are changed there. To change them here, make this device the capture device in Sync.
If this device has not seen the capture device's name yet, the title reads The capture device owns the camera list.
Why it appears
With iCloud sync on, you can choose one device as the Capture device. Its cameras, locations and shared settings are what every device shows. Every other device follows it, and cannot change them. This device is one of the followers.
On a follower, SecureEyes refuses adding, changing or removing a camera or a location, and changing a synced setting. Nothing is changed when it refuses. What Syncs in Sync & Devices lists what follows the capture device.
The same message shows up in other places, with other text under the title:
- On a camera's settings page: It is the capture device, so this camera's settings are changed there. The camera's sign-in is this device's own, so you can update it here. The message has an Update Sign-In button.
- When you choose This device and all my others in a reset: It is the capture device, so every device is reset from there. You can still reset only this device here.
- When you choose Replace beside Replace synced data with this device: It is the capture device, so the synced copy is replaced from there. Nothing was changed.
- When you turn sync on, as a question: It is the capture device, so this device takes its cameras. 1 camera that is only on this device will be removed. The number is how many cameras are only on this device. Choose Use its cameras to go ahead, or cancel.
- It appears only while sync is on. With sync off, this device edits freely.
Make this device the capture device
- Choose More, then Sync & Devices. The line at the top reads Sync is on.
- Under Event images, find the Capture device row. It shows the device that owns the list now.
- Open the row's menu and choose this device's name. This device is listed first. The other choices are your other devices and Any device.
- Wait a moment, or choose Sync to send the change now. The message stops appearing, and you can change cameras here.
- Choose Any device instead to have no capture device. Every device can then edit again, and the latest change to a camera wins.
- Capture device is part of iCloud sync, which needs Standard or Pro.
If the device it names is gone
The capture device may be sold, reset or lost. SecureEyes treats a capture device that is no longer in My devices as none, so every edit goes through. To clear the old choice for every device, remove the device.
- Choose More, then Sync & Devices, and find My devices.
- Find the card of the device that is gone. A device that has not synced for a week shows NOT SYNCING in its status line and a Remove button.
- Choose Remove. The box is titled Remove (device name)? and reads It disappears from this list on every device, and your devices have no capture device until you choose another. If it syncs again, it comes back to this list.
- Confirm with Remove. The capture choice is cleared for every device in the same step, so every device can edit again.
- If you want a capture device again, choose one as above.
- No Remove button, because the device synced less than a week ago: choose another device, or Any device, under Capture device instead.
- If the removed device syncs again, it comes back to My devices, but not as the capture device.
- A capture device that was removed while it was away does not take the list back when it returns. It syncs like any other device.
Sign-ins can still be saved here
A camera's sign-in is each device's own, so a follower can change it. So are the Camera passwords switch and the choice of which cameras stay live under your plan limit.
To save sign-ins from another device's setup, use Receive setup. It needs Standard or Pro.
- Choose More, then Sync & Devices.
- Under Transfer setup, find Receive setup and choose Receive.
- Scan or paste the code from the other device, and enter its key.
- On the last step, read the note: (device name) owns the camera list, so this saves the sign-ins only. Its cameras arrive through sync.
- Choose Save 3 Sign-Ins. The number is how many sign-ins the setup carries.
- Update Sign-In in a camera's settings works here. See Update a camera's username and password.
- A camera that arrived through sync with no sign-in shows Sign in on its tile. See Sign-in rejected with the right password.
- Cameras, locations and settings stay the capture device's. See Move your setup to another device.
What changes on your other devices when capture moves
- Every device takes the new choice the next time it syncs. Choose Sync to do it now.
- The new capture device's cameras, locations and synced settings become the ones every device shows. A device that followed the old capture device now follows the new one.
- The old capture device becomes a follower. Changes it makes to cameras, locations and synced settings are refused, with the new capture device's name in the message.
- Sign-ins do not move. Each device keeps its own, with its own Camera passwords switch and its own choice of live cameras.
- The new capture device is the one given first chance to capture events, and the one that deletes old events from iCloud. See Keep your devices in sync with iCloud.
- Cameras in a Hub's location are not affected. The Hub decides those.
- Choosing Any device lets every device edit again.
